Well, we’re in the last stretch of 2022. I thought it was high time I reviewed what happened fandom wise for me.

The most significant change is a 180 flip from liking girl groups / H!P for possibly a decade? To… groups outside of H!P!

I started 2022 very burnt out from my translations. I was translating tinytiny – a 30 to 40 minute (sometimes longer) show – every week without fail in 2021, then trying to wrap up some subbing projects on HPT. I was also looking for help with an updates account for OCHA NORMA and then helping with Anju updates… Squeezing in summaries of Harodori on H!P Wiki when I remember… I think I just bit off more than I can chew, lmao.

Everything I watched felt like an obligation rather than something I wanted to do because I liked it, which was a very different mindset from why I wanted to translate tinytiny in the first place.

With all of that, plus an actual depressive episode in real life at the time, I took a break from H!P and decided to start watching THE FIRST.

From then on it has been quite an adventure. It’s been a ride I am enjoying though, trust me. I can say I’ve been able to experience a whole lot more as a fan than I could’ve in all the years I’ve been an H!P fan and that’s really saying something…

I’ve been able to:

  • Catch some of their TV performances in real-time

  • Buy a livestream ticket to one of their concerts and access the archive to watch it for later

  • Join their FC (!!)

  • Get some of their merch (with help from other fans of course)

Most of which I wasn’t able to do or easily do as an H!P fan. The most I could do was attend their concert if they chose to stop by Taiwan, which they haven’t done for years already. Or catch their overseas live viewing, which is based on member popularity because the last one they did was for Maachan grad and I never made it in time to buy a ticket because it was all sold out.

BMSG isn’t perfect, it’s still a small and growing company but they are listening. Most importantly, I think having watched THE FIRST it really allowed me to understand what SKY-HI is doing and what his goals are for his company and the artists under him. He’s trying to change things up a bit so J-ent isn’t… the way it is right now. I can see the problems that he is seeing, and that has really convinced me to support him and his vision.

As for BE:FIRST, the boys have achieved a lot in just this year that I’ve been following them. It’s honestly wild to think some things they’ve done actually happened this year even though it feels so long ago.

I wish I can say the same for how I feel about H!P. I really enjoyed my time watching the girls grow in the years I was actively following them, but I think focusing on BE:FIRST and BMSG has been one of the best decisions I’ve made this year.

I’m glad I got to know them, they bring joy and happiness in ways I haven’t felt about H!P for some time. It’s also nice to know group/s outside of H!P. I think I’ve been in my H!P corner for so long I didn’t venture out and explore, so it’s been a good year! I feel like I’ve expanded my taste in music a little bit. (I still like my RnB and ballads, but it’s been nice to rekindle what I like about hip-hop and rap, LOL.)

Like I keep saying, if you decide to pick up and give THE FIRST a watch, please let me know so I can enjoy it with you!!

Ta ta for now~!
